Why Big Retailers Are Going Solar

It’s about economics, not just environmentalism.

Years ago, big retailers and tech companies installed solar panels as a way to take an environmental stance. But these days it’s often an economic choice that is fueled by the promise of lower and less volatile energy costs.

On Tuesday, Whole Foods WFM 0.78% said that it planned a huge project to cover nearly one-fourth of its stores with solar panels. After construction is complete, Whole Foods says it could be among the top 25 biggest commercial U.S. solar suppliers alongside Walmart WMT 0.37% , Walgreens WBA -0.48% , and Target TGT -0.51% .

Big roofs mean big solar at top U.S. retailers

“I know this looks like a typical Walmart,” President Obama said, speaking from the aisles of a store in Mountain View, California. “But it’s different.”

Why? Several years ago, Walmart covered the roof of this giant California store with solar panels, and a number of big retailers such as Target and IKEA are following suit. If every U.S. supermarket and shopping center converted underused roof space to solar panels, it could generate enough clean energy to power 7 million homes.

Turning a bright idea into reality

What’s driving this change? Retailers are finding that solar is good for business.

“No one’s sitting in a Walmart board room trying to think of ways to spend more money,” said Tom Kimbis of the Solar Energy Industries Association. Read More…
